WELCOME BCIT STUDENTS!

Hello my name is

Welcome to Entertainment Technology!

Have you ever listened to the lyrics of your favorite song and tried to picture what it would look like as a music videoif you directed it?

Have you ever seen a news story on TV and thoughtI would have done that differently. Isn’t everyone tired of seeing a weatherman hold an umbrella in the midst of a tropical storm?

Have you ever drummed out a beat on your desk and imagined how it would sound if you ~recorded it for real in a sound studio?

This is the beauty of SIGHT, SOUND, and MOTION–These 3 elements of communication are powerful and they are ALL fueled by your CREATIVITY!

Creativity is your very own bottomless pit of ideas–it fuels your imagination!

Please enjoy the tips, ideas, and websites included in this class blog, I hope they inspire you to be a little more creative.

If you are a member of my Entertainment Technology class, please use this blog for specific class assignments and for online access to important class worksheets.

I have also included a 5 DAY LESSON PLAN, if an emergency school closing occurs you will be instructed about when you need to refer to this blog and complete these assignments.

Open the Page (Tab at the top of the blog) called 5 DAY LESSON PLAN, and follow the assignment directions.

If you do not have access to a computer or the internet, a hard copy of the directions will be given to you in class.

Thank you for taking the time to view my blog!

Sincerely, Mrs. Sprague

5 DAY Lesson Plan: STEP ONE

Number One Float Component1st Step of the 5 DAY Lesson Plan…

Before you sit back relax in front of the TV to watch your favorite show, I would like  you to take a moment and think about the commercials.

Whether it’s a (:30) second commercial for the latest addition to a fast food chain’s dollar menu…

OR a (:60) second commercial with celebrity testimonials for Pro-active…

OR the dreaded Magic Bullet infomercial (I actually find this one very entertaining)…

All good, persuasive ads fall into one of 12 categories–or “Master Formats”.

Donald Gunn was the perceptive genius who 30 years ago determined that all persuasive ads can be categorized using the 12 Master Ad formats.

From the Geico caveman to your favorite Superbowl ads…they all fit into one of his formats.

STEP ONE:

1.) Below is a slide show that highlights the 12 Master Ad Formats, please watch it.

12 Master Ads Slideshow

2.) After you watch it, Go to the PAGE titled: 12 MASTER AD FORMATS

(Top Tab On BLOG) Read and review the formats and Donald Gunn further.

3.) Sit down tonight and watch your TV favorite show, pick 1 commercial that airs during the show.

4.) Please take Notes on the commercial.

YOUR NOTES MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Who was the commercial for? What client, product, or service?
  • What time did it air? Morning, Noon, Dinner time, Late night?
  • What show were you watching when it ran? Did it run more than once?
  • Post your commercial information as a comment to this “Day 1″ Post.
  • It must be posted by Tuesday (12 AM)

YOUR POST MUST INCLUDE:

  • Your name and the commercial you chose.
  • Keep your writing style informal, you can even use bullet points.
  • Please pay attention to spelling.
  • Remember no slang or abbreviations.

Thank you~Please e-mail me if you have any questions.

MASTER OF SUSPENSE: Topics Covered In Class

It’s time for STORYBOARDS!

Link here for the North By Northwest Cropduster Storyboard Sequence…

NOW CLICK the North By Northwest movie poster to watch the finished product.

(It’s 9 mins. long–so relax and put your feet up!)

How do you think they compare?

Remember from class,  that a good storyboard helps you visulaize your finished product.

Alfred Hitchcock was the Master of Suspense for many reasons…

His movies came to life before he ever hit record.  Creative vision and meticulous planning were two tools that made his storyboard use remarkable.

Take a lesson from Hitchcock…VISUALIZE…PLAN…THEN RECORD!

What is Royalty-free music?

When music is royalty-free, it means it can be used without paying fees to the copyright holder. But royalty-free does NOT MEAN FREE OF ALL COSTS. Music library companies that offer royalty-free music pay for the bundled copyright permissions from the original composer and publisher, then they license the music to you for a fee. Each company has a different policy about what these basic licensing rights include.

Generally such uses include, but are not imited to:

  • Broadcasting, Film and Theatre, Video and DVD, Computer Games and Physical Products, Multimedia and Web Design, On- Hold Systems, Media Training, Theme Parks, Exhibitions, Schools, Shops and Restaurants.

These music companies also offer volumes of music, where you pay a yearly fee for a library of songs that include a wide range of music genres and themes–such as Classic TV Game Shows, Bubble-Gum Pop Music, or 50′s Drive-in Favorites.

  • When you are NOT using Royalty-free music: you are required to pay a royalty fee every time the song is played AND you are only able to use the track for a pre-determined amount of time. The longer you want to use it, the more it costs. And if you want to buy the rights to it completely that’s BIG BUCKS!

What does this mean to YOU?

It means…you are just at the tip of the copyrighting ice berg!
